As temperatures increase, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) urges families to adopt heat safety measures while enjoying the summer sun - especially for children. Through the Louisiana Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) program, DHH is able to provide health professionals and community members with information and supplies to help prevent and prepare for pediatric medical emergencies, such as heat illness. The department urges parents to protect children enjoying outdoor activities during hotter months. National EMS Week is recognized May 17 -23, 2015.

The purpose of the annual EMS for Children Day celebration is to raise awareness about the need to improve and expand specialized care for children in the prehospital and acute care settings. This year, National EMS for Children Day will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, and for the 12th consecutive year it will be held in conjunction with EMS Week (May 18-24).

2014 marks the 40th year since President Gerald Ford declared November 3 – 10, 1974 as the first “National Emergency Medical Services Week.” National Emergency Medical Services Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety and honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's "front line."

The Bureau of EMS released the updated EMS Instructor requirements. Anyone desiring to be credentialed by the Bureau of EMS as a Primary Instructor in Louisiana will need to complete the requirements outlined in the new policy document. Existing EMS Instructors will have until March 31, 2016 to transition from an EMS Instructor to an EMS Primary Instructor.

Effective April 1, 2014, all Emergency Medical Technician practical exams will be based on the National Registry of EMTs skill sheets. The Bureau of EMS understands that this change will impact how students prepare for the exam and understand some students, especially students re-testing, may need to re-test on the old forms. We will work with instructors and students to ensure the transition is smooth and efficient. The NREMT exam forms are available at the NREMT website, and they are also available for download in the EMS Portal.

Bureau of EMS welcomes Ms. Rose Johnson as the new EMS for Children Program Manager. Rose is an accomplished Emergency Department Nurse and has been a strong advocate for both EMS and the EMS for Children program in Louisiana for a long time. In addition to her new role at the Bureau of EMS, she is also the current president of Louisiana's Emergency Nurse Association.

On December 6, 2013, the Office of Public Health announced that Mr. Donald Woodyard, Jr. has been selected to serve as the new BEMS Director, overseeing OPH’s efforts in the overall planning, coordination, licensing and regulation of the State of Louisiana’s EMS system.
