Louisiana Lieutenant Governor Jay Dardenne, Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) Secretary Kathy H. Kliebert, and DHH Public Health Assistant Secretary J.T. Lane received their annual flu shots at the East Baton Rouge Parish Health Unit today. The annual flu shot event is part of the State's efforts to remind members of the public about the importance of getting a flu shot or nasal spray to protect against the flu. Information on where to get vaccinated against the flue is available at www.fighttheflu.la.gov.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released a report that shows Louisiana physicians are seeing more flu cases than in other parts of the United States. The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) strongly encourages Louisiana residents to receive flu vaccinations as the best protection against the flu, but also to use antiviral medications, such as Tamiflu, in the instance that the flu does occur.

Louisiana’s weekly flu report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) includes a new pediatric death from the Central Louisiana region. So far this flu season, five children have died from the flu in Louisiana. State law requires hospitals and health care professionals report all flu deaths in children to the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, the state shares that information weekly with the CDC. The four previous pediatric deaths were from northwest (1), southeast (2) and southwest Louisiana (1).

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals today confirmed the death of a Northwest Louisiana child in a Shreveport hospital this week due to H1N1 flu.

Today, the Department of Health and Hospitals officially kicked off its annual "Fight the Flu" campaign urging Louisianians in every corner of the state to get a flu vaccination. DHH Secretary Kathy Kliebert reminded residents that a flu shot might be the difference between a happy or miserable holiday season.

Starting this week, parish health units around the state began offering flu vaccinations to all Louisiana residents of age to be vaccinated, the Department of Health and Hospitals announced Monday. In addition to protecting against the seasonal flu, new studies suggest the vaccine may also protect against heart attacks and stroke.
