Medicaid Expansion Success Stories - Page 3

Since coverage under Medicaid expansion began in July 2016, more than 400,000 working Louisianans have gained access to health care. But, it’s not just access. It’s the insurance coverage that pays for treatments that were once too costly for many people. Below are the stories of some of these newly covered residents.

I now have coverage and am going to the doctor for routine care the first time in over six years (excluding pregnancies when I qualified for LaMoms.

Both of my parents are low income and currently depend on Medicaid, because of expansion, for all of their healthcare. My sister-in-law is over 50, currently on long-term disability and is dependent on this coverage for her chemotherapy treatments for ovarian cancer.

I have an elderly friend who worked as a yard man for decades, worked just as long and hard as anyone else, but never made a lot of money, certainly not enough to purchase health insurance or the medicines he needs for his asthma and high BP. Gov. Edward's recent acceptance of federal Medicaid monies has helped out my friend considerably because he now has a regular doctor. He is very appreciative, and seeing to his health in proactive ways now.

I have a female friend who were recently incarcerated and who is now working to successfully reenter her community. She has a job in the hospitality industry but do not have health benefits. If not for Medicaid, she would have no health insurance coverage for her medical conditions. She is working very hard to rebuild her live for herself and her children, working long days. She is s contributing member of her community and deserves the basic right of healthcare.

Without Medicaid coverage I now have, I could not afford the cost of co-pays and medicine. I addition to helping me get to see a doctor, many of my friends who have worked all of their lives in low-paying jobs are now covered. What a relief to be able to get medical care. Not having coverage, and getting real sick is a death sentence to those with a chronic disease like diabetes like me.

I cannot afford care without Medicaid. Before expansion, I always had to go to the emergency room. Then I would leave with a list of doctors to call and they would not treat me. Then collection calls started. It was a nightmare. I was so glad once the Medicaid extension was available. I applied and was accepted and now have good doctors who are trying to help and we are not getting calls for payments.

Prior to expansion, I had to pay high premiums for coverage. Now I have Medicaid and can use a doctor without instead of going without care and worrying what might happen.

I am covered through the Medicaid expansion and cannot afford insurance without this help. While in generally good health, I am in my 40s now and cannot take insurance lightly... Soon enough I will need it, so now I have peace of mind.

Since getting on Medicaid, I’ve been to the doctor four times. But, before that, I couldn't imagine having the ability to go to a doctor four times a year, despite suffering from severe health ailments including sarcoidosis of the lungs and lymph nodes, deep vein thrombosis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and hypothyroidism, among others. Those are just the major things, and expansion allowed me to get it when I couldn't get it before. Before becoming eligible for Medicaid because of expansion, I had to forego insurance so my husband could get insurance to cover his cancer treatments. The ability to see doctors as I need has had a dramatic impact on my life, particularly since my husband passed away.

I haven’t had to use my coverage yet, but it is nice to know that I have full coverage. Having Medicaid gives a lifeline to help keep people going. I don't think anybody in their right mind can stand there and say that you shouldn't provide Medicaid. It's insanity.
